Subject
Oral history from Ghana to Missouri
Description
Sylvia F’s parents are from Ghana. Sylvia F. arrived in the U.S. after her father accepted a teaching position at a university. She remembers that she was the only black family and immigrants in her rural city. Not only did Sylvia F have to adjust to a new culture, she frequently encountered microaggressions such as the assumptions that her ancestors were enslaved; that her hair was dirty and hard to wash; and that she was too tan. Most of Sylvia F’s family lives in Ghana and communicates through WhatsApp. The first time that she saw people that looked like her was when she went back to Ghana.
